You can be a non-exec director of another company (or indeed an exec director of another company) while working for someone else. Non-exec director posts are generally pretty low paid (as opposed to full time exectutive director posts) and Mr Birkett may just be supplimenting his income.

Indeed, many of our MPs are non-exec directors of companies, although they are required to declare this..

No he's no leaving, just giving some of experience to another board.

This would all have been ratified by the VM board.
