Fears are growing for a missing 11-year-old girl after she posted worrying messages on Facebook after her disappearance.

Would Facebook be able to get the IP of where it's posted from at all?

I hope they find her.

I thought you had to be 13+ to even have an account on Facebook?

You do.

Realistically, it is down to US COPPA regs, but it is a sensible age to let/not let kids on facebook anyway.

She's been found :)

We all worry about our kids but allowing an 11yr old what i'm assuming was unsupervised access to the net is wrong IMO. Our Sammi had a supervised and limited account up until 16, and Dan still does at 15.

Bethia is only limited by not being allowed to use social network sites. She does not like it and hassles me about opening a Facebook account. There are loads of parents with young teenage kids on there but it just makes me uncomfortable.

There is, of course, that problem (which IMO renders the COPPA rules largely pointless). There is also the problem that facebook (or indeed most other websites) has no real way of verifying the age of the people using it.

This is actually why I have a problem with online gambling. Beyond the credit card (which could very well be nicked), the companies have no way of knowing how old their clients are. However, I digress.

My own personal opinion is that kids should not have unsupervised access to the Internet (any site), and they certainly should at least be monitored on sites like Facebook.

I know I often rant about how the media overplays the threat of paedophiles (and I think they do), but that does not mean that there are no predators out there, who are just waiting to snare an innocent kid.

Still, glad to see this girl is back..

Concur with that. Given what's so readily available on the web, it amazes me at just how little attention some parents pay to what their children may be getting up to...

I do know that (and know of several kids of secondary school age (but under 13) on facebook. They just probably put their dob in as x/y/1995|6 to bypass the checks :s

It's ofc totally unverifiable if they do that - and when they reach 13 if they choose to rv the lie they are there anyway and they are able to join.

I'm not on facebook though.

and the kids don't know that they aren't really meant to give that level of information away (common sense for us, but they obviously aren't aware of the danger).

Playing Devil's Advocate for a bit, I can't see anywhere where the Facebook activity was the cause of, or was in anyway involved in, her disappearance. All the report says is that there messages posted after her disappearance, which caused them some concern. It could be that they said why she was running a way, or what she was planning to do.

With all of that said, I will not allow my children to have accounts on these sites, until they reach the appropriate age.

Playing the Devil himself, I can't see anywhere where the Facebook activity was being blamed for it.

There seems to be an over concern about the child's potential activity on the site, given her young age. I was merely pointing out that there was no direct connection between the two.
