Minister admits: we got it wrong on immigration

Quote:

The Home Secretary admitted yesterday that the Government had made mistakes in its handling of immigration.......In his first speech on the subject, Alan Johnson said that ministers had ignored immigration problems and the growing pressure on jobs and services in parts of Britain. Some communities had legitimate concerns because they had been particularly affected.
I can remember having various arguments with left wingers here on CF about this. Now Labour are even admitting they were wrong on the matter. Exactly what I and others have been saying here for years, to howls of derision from our comrades here. Any left wingers here fancy apologizing to me about this now? :dozey:

Wait, there is more:

Home Office covered up immigration risk
Quote:

Labour's “open door” immigration policy knowingly risked allowing dangerous people to settle in Britain unchecked, according to documents seen by The Sunday Times.

The Whitehall correspondence, which was illegally withheld by the Home Office for four years, shows how ministers were told by the country’s most senior immigration official that his staff were to be “encouraged to take risks” when granting visas, work permits and extended residency to hundreds of thousands of new migrants.

The cover-up of this policy of risk-taking was so concerted that Richard Thomas, the then information commissioner, sent a team of investigators into the Home Office to trawl all the relevant papers. Earlier this year he rebuked the department for breaking the law and ordered it to release the material under the freedom of information (FoI) law.
Immigration a la labour.......good for the country eh? :dozey: It seems us right wingers here were right all along....... Doubt we'll get any apologies though.....

The thing is these people always try this on at or near election time. It's their speciality! They know they're in deep trouble so now's the time to apparently acknowledge their mistakes, talk tough, promise to act and hope to con us all into voting for them yet again! If they do retain power, expect more of the same cynicism, ineptitude, lies and spin.

The treasury makes a lot of money out of some immigrants (work permits, etc) but then gives more than that away in benefits, education, etc, to them...

Culpable or inept, for the damage they have done ,the outgoing government has ensured that the labour party wont return to power until long after I am gone.

Could you provide an example, please, Rammy, of people arguing passionately in favour of Labour's immigration policy? If you mean disagreeing with the bunch of bullcrip that the Mail and the Express print on this issue, you may be confusing disliking xenophobia and incitement to hatred with passionately supporting Labour policy.

btw, if you think I'm a left-winger, how do you explain my service in the RAF, my 29 years membership of the Tory Party, the fact that I have attended over a dozen Tory Party conferences, helped out at General Elections and by-elections, stood for local council, had lunch with MT three times, been an Area and National Officer of the Conservatives, read the Times, the Telegraph, and the Economist - or perhaps things aren't always cut and dried, and some people have a range of views on things. ;)
