Ridicolous Speeds on 20mb
 

Right been having speed issues ever since setting the internet up a month ago. I have never gone past 8mb and the speeds usually tend to be in the region on 1-3.

Your downstream SNR is way too low. i.e. too much noise on the line. It needs to be 35 dB or above.

Maybe the coax cable needs screwing in tightly either end - or else it's an engineer job. It can be in the splitter into your house, anywhere up to the street cabinet or beyond.

Cheers for the reply. I shall phone them up yet again and demand an engineer over. Lets see if they finally sort it out.

It is a bit low but note the downstream modulation Seph. I guess VM know the network sucks in that area, hence 64QAM. It's a shade low rather than being horrid as it would be on 256QAM where 33dB would be a requisite.

Really the modem should be ok-ish with that, check out the specs for a BER / Bit Error Rate of < 1 x 10^8 that one modem manufacturer claim:

Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)

Euro-DOCSIS:
64QAM: >= 25.5dB
256QM: -13 dBmV ~ -6dBmv >= 34.5dB
-6dBmV~ +17dBmV >= 31.5dB

Here also are the power level operating parameters for Euro-DOCSIS that same manufacturer supplies:

64 QAM: –17 dBmV ~ +13dBmV
256 QAM: –13dBmV ~ +17 dBmV

I got an engineer booked for tomorrow, lets see if that sorts anything out.
