can this be ddwrt'ed or some other custom firmware installed like Tomato

I think not. The only third-party supported chipsets seem to be Atheros and Broadcom (I believe yours is a Ubicom jobby).

I use DD-WRT on my Buffalo, so I can see why you would want it.
