What operating system are you running?

If you are finding the updates are not installing, it's doubtful they'll install regardless of the website they are dowlnoaded from. You also run the risk of viruses.

If Windows Update won't install them properly, go find the Windows Update Catalog and get the updates from there.

look for the version on the Microsoft site to download for multiple pc's rather than the live download ones often that will solve the problem

if its an update for something like media player then uninstall the program then reinstall again from a predownloaded version rather than the live ones

That's where Windows Update Catalog comes into its own. :)
