Wireless Router

Hi guys,

I hope that someone may be able to help me.

I have VM broadband connected directly via one PC, and that PC networked though a standard router with other machines to form a small network and share connections.

Some while back I had a wireless connection which I simply connected to another port on the router to add wireless connectivity for laptops. This unfortunately stopped working and I am now looking to add wireless again, but all the broadband routers connect directly to the modem and for a specific reason I want to avoid that.

Is there any way I can obtain the original wireless setup I had?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

The Force

You want to use a wireless Access Point. But I'm not really clear from your description of how your network layout would differ from a wireless router if you are plugging the access point into the router

Re: Wireless Router

Thanks Rob, I'll look into those.

Set up that I have:

Modem > Main PC > LAN router > Other PC's

What I want:

Modem > Main PC > LAN router > Other PC's/wireless

How the broadband routers seem to connect:

Modem > BB wireless router > Main PC > LAN router > Other PC's

The reason I want the set up I do is so I can disconnect the wireless network without disconnecting access to the internet.

HTH.

Re: Wireless Router

If you put the PC between the modem and router you'd have to have 2 nics in the PC and use ICS..then the router isn't routing but instead just being used as a simple hubb and WAP

Why don't you just wire it up as normal for a router

modem>router>wired/wifi PC's and just simply log into the router and turn off the wifi when/if you want it off???? (it won't effect the wired PC's)

Thanks for your input guys.

I think I've got enough to try out to get a set up close to what I want.
