Need a Basic ADSL Router
 

Afternoon all :)

I'm in need of a basic ADSL modem/router.

Doesn't need to do anything fancy, just needs to connect me to the BT Broadband connection and support port forwarding, a firewall, and NAT.

Ideally though I'd like something with the power supply built in so that I can just plug a standard kettle type lead (or similar) into it.

Anybody got any thoughts/alternative suggestions?

try ebay ask to make sure is the bt compatible b4 u order there cheap on there.

We've been using one of those Linksys routers in the office now for a good year or two. Haven't had to touch it.

It does have a separate power supply though.

Thanks Rob, thought it probably would - most Linksys stuff has the big black 'wall wart' type supplies, I'm guessing this is no different?

Yep it is fairly bulky, but stuck in the bottom of the cabinet it's not a big issue.

I also found that router failry easy to configure. We use fixed IPs for the WAN side components of the network, and the Linksys has coped with that just fine.

Cool, thanks.

This will just sit as our modem/gateway connecting the lab to the big wide (scary) Internet. Provided it can handle the uptime and the traffic it should be fine.

Mine deals with everything our ADSL max connection can throw at it. Email, web browsing, uploads and downloads to various third party sites. Indeed anything that 20 or so users can create.

Whilst one LAN port is connecting the the server and thus network, I'm frequently connected via one of the other LAN ports so as to bypass the server at the same time the server will be in use. As I say the thing has been totally stable.

I have a non-wireless ADSL router that's yours for P+P. :)

Rob M has been a Mod for ages.....Rob has been a Mod since the dawn of time :D :D

Thanks for the offer though, unfortunately as I said I'm having to purchase through work, so they have a list of authorised suppliers (which you're probably not on ;) :D).

If it were for my own use I'd probably take you up on the offer :)

Have a look at BroadbandBuyer.co.uk if they are on your list of suppliers. I would recommend something off the NETGEAR range, cant fault them to be honest. I have a DGN2000 which is proberly over kill for what you need.

Looks good Matthew, thanks for the pointer - not sure I'd get away with buying a wireless device though.

There has recently been a firmware upgrade with QOS, comes in very handy, you can also have 4 different SSID's running on it as well. Best router I've ever had.

I had a lot of grief with Netgear in the office. Despite it suggesting it was VPN passthrough capable, it blocked the incoming connectivity authentication processes. As a result I stick with Linksys for routers.
