Remote access to Home PC

I am attempting to see if I can connect over the internet from another ISP to my Virgin Broadband connected PC.

This post is intentionally ignoring the security aspects inherent in such a set up and is concentrating on the communications issues involved in connecting from a remote internet site to my home PC.

The experiment I was trialling was to attempt to use Windows Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) to connect to the PC. I obtained the IP address of the Cable Modem which was in the 82.X.X.X range.

Attempting an RDC session setup failed. A ping to the network 82.X.X.X address also failed. I was then subsequently informed by Virgin helpdesk staff that yet another address range was in use which was the network 10.X.X.X range.

This immediately led me to believe that there is another layer of Network Address Translation in the Virgin network over and above that of my PC and the Cable Modem, and was between the Network ten address assigned to the Cable Modem and the Virgin Internet gateway.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case and what (if any I suspect) solution there to the remote access from a different ISP problem I am trying to address.

Thanks in anticipation. :)

Re: Remote access to Home PC

Is the PC connected directly to the modem, or via a router? If so are the necessary ports on the router set to forward correctly? Is the home computer set to allow remote connections correctly?

I'm suspicous that third party software to allow this sort of thing might be the way forward.

Needs port forwarding. I can access machines through rdp on my VM connection fine.

The way to go is Logmein (free version)- I use this to support my mother on ADSL and I'm pretty sure it works with VM - as long as you open the correct ports. The logmein client registers with their servers so it will always know the correct external IP.

As Aragorn says, logmein works a treat. Not had a problem with it in the 12 months I`ve been using it. I can access my home pc from the works pc and only last week started using my iphone to access home pc.
Was quite funny the first time I used it, my daughter rang me at work and told me I had been hacked and the mouse was opening folders up all on its own. lol

I take it LogMeIn app uses uPNP to set up the port forwards?

Not sure - I manually set the port forwarding on my mother's router. Give it a try, I guess.

Oh, I have no need to use it, just wondered how LogMeIn deals with port forwarding, that's all :) WinVNC ftw!

I use LogMeIn. You don't need to do any config work on your router as it uses a 3rd party server (LogmeIn secure) to make the connection.
