Programming Clash
Recently I added Fringe on Sky One to my Program Planner for recording the series.
When I did this, I was instantly notified of a clash. Upon checking, I discovered that the clash was caused by the program directly following Fringe on the same channel (this was some behind the scenes program). Firstly, I don't care about this second program but it has automatically been selected as part of the series link - anyway I can cancel just that part of the program? Secondly, will the whole of the program still record even with the clash since it is on the same channel? Many thanks, |
Re: Programming Clash
I had the same problem and just removed everything but the program. You could also set the black spot to the part that clashes and it will miss that bit out.
BTW i think stargate universe does the same thing. |

"Black Spot?"

Re: Programming Clash
On the planned programs you will see some round record marks next to each program. When you have a clash, you can either remove a clash program or change the clash so that the program you want to record records.
If i remember, the black spot is the program with the clash that will not record. |
Re: Programming Clash
My main problem is that the program causing the clash is a program I don't actually want to record, it is just picked up as part of the series link!
And that Black Spot is an Exclamation Mark iirc... |
Re: Programming Clash
If a program is set to record based on a series link, you still cancel the planned recording of that episode without affecting the other episodes.
What I find I have to do in order resolve clashes were there isn't really a clash, is to cancel the planned recording of all of the affected programmes and set the recordings individually. The most common reason I find for the STB suddenly reporting clashes where there were none and there are still no genuine clashes, is when an update happens to the EPG because of a timing change(longer/shorter/later/earlier) to a programme. What I think happens is that the original planned recording is still in place when the STB checks whether the programme with the revised timing can be done because a potential clash. It is possible to set your priority of programme types(planned/manual/series link) on the 'recording priorities' menu of the 'V+ extras' option(4) of the 'V+ recordings' menu(ie the V+ button). So you could set(if it isn't already) the V+ to record a planned individual recording instead of a series linked recording when a clash occurs. |
Re: Programming Clash
could also be the extended recording time at the start and the end as i found out

O yes in deed. The most common reason I find.:dozey: |

I think its to do with the fact that originally Sky 1 were only showing one episode tonight at 8pm with the behind the scenes program at 9pm. Now they're showing the whole 2 parter tonight with the behind the scenes programme at 10pm. I think it confused the v+ as I had the 2nd episode + the behind the scenes programme at 9pm. |
Re: Programming Clash
Aah, but it is heartening to know that if is this was Sky+, it would a far worse set of circumstances. At least if you are not recording another programme, even with the clash, the recording would not be affected. Under Sky+, with only its two tuners, you would see this problem all the time.

Re: Programming Clash
I have to say as a newbie to VM this clashing problem is something that is really getting on my wick! The VM+ is just so much high maintenance when you compare it to the Sky HD box. The added benefit of being able to record a second programme is just not worth the hastle, consecutive programmes just bring up clashes continually I do not want to manually record programmes but I will probably have to go that route.
I have problems with clashing, with Audio Description sound on C4HD , with the planner having films shown at the wrong time...(Thank goodness I have reconnected my sky box so I can check when films actually start! ) and I have never missed so many starts and ends of programmes before. Unfortunately I am stuck with VM for another 10 months,3 weeks and 4 days so I suppose I will have to get used to what I consider now to be a totally inferior technology ....why oh why did I do it???...I could just have had the broadband and phone and would have been very happy  Oh and by the way I do not work for Sky, I just expect technology to work properly before it is rolled out to paying customers. |

P.S. Welcome to CF, by the way. :) |
Re: Programming Clash
Thanks flyboy for the welcome :) I know it must seem I am moaning for no reason.
I only found myself here to find out if I had just been unlucky with three faulty boxes. As it turns out , now having read a lot of the posts on here I can see they are not faulty its just the way they are. I will perhaps have to spend a lot more time getting to understand how the box works, not relying so much on the EPG and setting more manual recordings and not expecting too much. I hope you are right that once the 10 months 3weeks and 3 days are up of my contract I will be happy to keep VM, in the meantime I will just whistle a happy tune ;) |

Re: Programming Clash
The V+ removes the 'extend recordings' padding where necessary. If you have two recordings planned for 9-10pm and another for 10-11pm then the padding is not applied.
What I find happens, is that if I set two recordings for 9pm-10pm and the timing of one of those changes(earlier/later, shorter/longer), then when checking to see if the amended timing would cause a clash it still appears to have the original 9-10pm in it's list to check against. This means that the V+ thinks that there are two recordings set for 9-10pm and another set for example 9-10.05pm and so signals a clash where there really isn't one. It thinks of the amended timing as a new programme entry and leaves the original entry, in the list, but hidden. |
