hdmi cable - no sound (laptop to tv)

hi guys
i have connected my laptop an acer 6920g which has a hdmi port to my hdtv a TOSHIBA REGZA I get the picture ok, but i am getting no sound? does anyone have any solution plzz

i have a tried 3.5mm stero cable and connected via my headphone socket on laptop to the headphone socket on the tv, but there is still no sound.

the only other options on the tv is there are two ports one is listed (pc hdmi audio and a digital audio socket) i have tried connecting the 3.5mm stereo cable to the hmdi audio socket, but it doesn't work either
also have the red/white/yellow socket

i thought hdmi would carry sound, as it works for my xbox.

can anyone offer any light on this situation and reccomend a cable i could buy?

many thanks

Normally when you plug a computer into a TV via HDMI (assuming it's a proper HDMI with onboard audio chipset as opposed to DVI posing as an HDMI) it creates a new piece of Audio-Out hardware in Windows, you may had to switch over to this from the control panel in Sound to get it to work

i have acer hd audio manager in control panel. i have checked it out there is a category "hdmi output" and it is selected as default advice.. i have tried the usual playing around, but its still only playing sound via my laptop not via the tv...aaghhh
