atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered

Hello... for the last month or so ive been getting this error pop up from the taskbar: "atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered". Then my screen flashes black 3 times then it BSODs.

When the PC comes back on it says your computer has recovered from an unexpected shutdown and to solve the problem, update to the latest graphic drives. So I have updated them, rolled them back, and updated again but it still hasnt solved the problem.

My OS is Vista Home Premium and my PC is a Dell XPS 420. Also the graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD3870.

Anyone know how I can sovle the problem? :)

How long have you had your GPU?

Does it happen when gaming or running any 3D app, or just in 2D mode on the desktop?

Id suggest uninstalling the drivers and running Driver Sweeper in safe mode, then install the latest batch from ATI.

It's pretty similar to it's Nvidia equivilant, however, it could be down to a software issue, or it could be hardware related as it is in many other cases, just that your card could be on its way out im afraid...

This seems to have been an on-going problem for as long as Vista has been around.
Loads of hits on google with a variety of suggestions.
A number of people have fixed it by removing the ATI control panel. It seems the best way to do it is to uninstall and clean all the ATI graphics stuff first then install just the driver package.

Have you changed your hardware in any way recently?

No, not changed any hardware and the PC is fairly new.

Also, it just does this error whenever it wants lol, when im at the desktop or running a program.

Sounds like a faulty GPU. I'd recommend trying it in another rig (a friends or something) and see if the problem still happens there.
