If you are gonna do media ie watching vids etc and its staying in the home then I prefer larger screens myself

compaq round the middle

SB07 is selling a modest laptop on ebay brand new may well be worth a bid

Dunno cant imagine there would be much of a difference. The Dells would be a good choice also. You have plenty of scope in your budget

looking at the dell site if it was me the choice is slim as you can only afford the cheapest in the 17 " model. You can load it up though to make it better

Edit again by the time you have speced it to match the Tosh its more expensive

This is slightly over budget, but a nice machine if your local Aldi has any left in stock

I'd always advise the Acer line. Great, solid laptops, and generally always reliable. Great service from Acer too.

Model recommendations and spec depend on what you'll be using it for however in terms of manufacturers:

I'll second the Toshiba recommendation. Build quality of every Toshiba I've owned or worked with has been excellent which, in my opinion, is particularly important with any portable device. Same goes for Dell laptops.

I've never owned a Medion laptop but my previous desktop was Medion and that lasted for many years of use and was rarely turned off.
