Poor signal even though router is in same room!

I am using an old Belgin 54g router. Even when using my laptop in the same room as the router the signal fluctuates between excellent to very poor (only one bar) and then keeps disconnecting.

Does anyone know what could be the cause? Also I'm out to get a new router. Any recommendations?

Try changing the channel in the routers web interface.

A standard Netgear WGR614 will suffice if you are doing general web browsing etc, it has 2 antennas so it should give pretty good range.

Check the antenna in the router,it might be loose or not making good contact.. (That happens to me once in awhile,i just tap the unit and it usually comes back to 100%)

Good luck!
