Wired LAN through house
Hi,
I've just run a cable from upstairs to downstairs - but it does not work - think I've wired it up wrong... I've used one of these punch down outlets using the top colour code to wire it up. And one of these RJ45's. With this, was a small square piece of plastic - I'm not sure what it's for - perhaps some kind of cable stay? Any ideas? Cheers Lee |
Re: Wired LAN through house
You're gonna need either:
1) a network cable tester 2) a continuity meter and a very long RJ45 extension lead 3) a continuity meter, a long piece of bell wire and an assistant You've either got the wires jumbled up or one or more of the connections is not correct. Pin 1 should be connected to pin 1 etc. Check you've used the right wiring here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TIA/EIA-568-B It doesn't matter if you use T565A or T565B (most common) - so long as you're consistent. |
Re: Wired LAN through house
Hi,
Yeah I have a cable tester - in the car - not tried it yet. Just wondered if it was cabled correctly on the punch down outlet... |
Re: Wired LAN through house
The number of times I've wired it up and then tested to find one of the wires isn't connected properly, or somehow I've crossed it over. Be especially sure you are wiring both ends to the same pattern, there do seem to be two options. You just can't do cabling without a tester in your hand, not the car ;)

Think I wired the punch down as a B and the RJ45 as an A according to the cable tester which is NOW IN MY HANDS!! :D Appears to be working now - but a few drop outs. Will check again tomorrow. |
