Wireless network...to the Garage

A friend's asked me for advice today about a wireless solution for his home broadband to wirelessly reach to his garage located 35ft away from his house.

His house is vintage...mid 1700 so the walls are v. thick...his windows are tiny (imagine castle slat windows)..so not great for WAP postioning.

Anyway, I casually advised him to get the fastest (protocol) router he could find....but then ended my advice by then stating that if he intended to then use his garage as a place of work...and do alot of confidential working, including credit card...then any wireless solution would be a bad idea! Wireless encryption is **** poor, i went onto explain...it's only as good how random the stream is...but becuase you can always expect known string to exist in the stream, such as "http://www", then crackers can then easily hack into the stream and start fishing out your credit card details.... etc.

Anyway, what I'm asking you is...am I wrong, and is there a fool proof and secure way to interconnect his garage wireless without regretting it long term..i.e. when someone has emptied your bank balance or stolen your identity!

Any ideas?

Cable Trunking + Cat6.
Through the Garden or Area between the house and garage.

It's the safest bet anyway.

You could do the 5Ghz band for added obscurity, lock it down with good encryption, MAC filter, no DHCP server (Static IPs only) etc...

You could always use a very directional antenna to make it difficult for anyone else to pick it up.

Was going to suggest the same, though that obviously does depend on how the garage is linked up to the mains.

Any kind of cabled connection is out of the question, it seems. This was my default response...but he explained (to death! ;)) how running a cable from the house to the garage isn't possible. Above or below ground. :(

How does a 5Ghz WAP offer obscurity? What's the difference over 2.4GHz?

What level of encryption is needed, considering the nasty picture I painted above, about pattern matching..to de-randomise...random (encrypted) data?

Any suggestions/recommendations on super secure and super fast wireless access points?

Advantage of 5Ghz?

Hardly anyone uses it. It will not be visible to 99% of people out there.

No trying to answer my own question..but here's a low-down on 5GHz:

Pointer: if you add the template parabolic dishes to the aerials (one on the transmitting router, one on the receiving device), and point them at each other, you can get it going 5 bars of signal over 50m or so. I have tested this in my own house with 15-20 metres between top floor and bottom floor where router is, and the receiver with dish pointed down and router with dish pointed up combine to give me 5 bars and a rock-solid signal. :) What gets even better signal is if you do it on A3 card instead of A4. :)
