How to stream HD from PC to TV

Could a PS3 be used to stream full HD material - say a Bluray rip - from a PC upstairs to an HDTV in a lounge using a wired router setup ?

Or should it be a media PC - looking for the playback to be smooth and - control to be fast.

Anyone have this sort of setup - any suggestions pitfalls to look out for ?

Yeah check out PS3 Media Server, should do what you want

http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/list

It's Java based and transcodes files to a format the PS3 can understand on the fly, it lists all of your drives for you by default

Or you could try WMP11 as you probably have that already installed.

I use it to stream to a laptop with a cracked screen downstairs plugged into my TV.
I've got a wireless keyboard with touchpad built in.
Means I can also watch iPlayer on the TV :)

At my gf's, she has her Xbox360 connected up to stream to.
