Open DNS Problems
 

For the past few nights after around 10pm my connection has gone sluggish and i mean so slow that i was downloading a file which was 51mb at 311kb/s and i couldnt even open a second website on 20mb thats how slow.

Turns out its Open DNS, as soon as i switched back to Virgins DNS all is well again perfect speeds and connection. Open DNS works fine in the day just not after around 10pm for me and has been like this since i would say around Tuesday.

Are there any other good free DNS Servers out there i could try?

Virgin's DNS servers are on their network so as long as they're behaving they'll give good performance. Open DNS has some advantages (huge cache size) however some people prefer not to have ads and similar if they mistype a URL etc. Each to their own.

Ads? What you get is actually a page of Yahoo search results with OpenDNS branding on them. OpenDNS makes money if you use those results. Much the same as Mozilla makes money by defaulting 404 errors to a Google search in Firefox. OpenDNS and Mozilla Firefox are both products that are free to the end user but have to be paid for somehow.

We use OpenDNS here and have not noticed any late-night performance issues.

Perhaps you could try the DNS speedchecking tool that DaiNasty posted in another thread.
If nothing else it will give you a list of others to try..
