BT Line - 5 wires... HELP!!

Hi,

I have recently moved in to my new place and I want to get Virgin Broadband - it's an upstairs maisonette so I have to use the phone line as they don't supply the optic cable to my place.

The phone line which comes in through the wall consists of 5 copper wires in total. I have 2 wires which are insulated in a grey outer sleeve and 3 copper wires (which don't look like they have any insulation around them - just paint!) which are all twisted up together.

I have searched on how to eventually get these to a standard phone socket with no joy. The biggest problem is knowing which wire is which and if I need to use all of them or not and I don't want to pay BT up to £125 (apparently) to wire it all in for me.

Any help appreciated!

Cheers!

If there is no phone service to the flat at all, and the wires are in such a poor state, you are probably best off just swallowing hard and paying BT for installation. If there's anything wrong or even just a little substandard about the cabling, it can have an effect on the broadband speed you will get. You could end up with months of hassle chasing Virgin (or whichever ISP you choose) to contact BT to send an engineer round.

ah, thanks for that. I guess it's better to do that to ensure I have a decent connection.

Thanks for the advice!

roger that doesnt always work. A friend of mine in Basildon essex when they moved, they were told because there was a line in the house even though it wasnt in working order they would repair that one and not fit a new one therefore couldnt claim the free offer.

I think think that offer has ended some time ago judging by the pop up in the advert on moneymakers !

If you follow the links, the offer originally ended 30th June, but has been extended to 30th Sep.

shouldn't make any difference the charge is there not just for install but if any work is needed

the free offer is likely to apply

just remember you have to phone and quote the offer
