Explain about FTP please.

Hi
We have a few megs of webspace with NTL/VM.
So I can transfer files up there using FTP.
For example, if I post a picture up there, I can allow others to view it by giving them the link:-
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.smith/picture.jpg
(Where john.smith is my NTL user name and picture.jpg is the filename of the posted picture).

Similarly, I can post other types of files up there and allow people to download them by giving them the link.

But the disadvantage is that I would be telling everyone that I'm called John Smith.
I don't want to do anything illegal, but it would be better if my user name wasn't up there in the link.

What I want to know is, are there any places where you can get free rent of some space where you can just use a nickname?

Or some 'anonymous' site where it doesn't get erased after a few days.

I've already signed up to drivehq.com, but I don't think that you can just post links. They expect you to 'publish' files then send people some kind of password by email so that others can log on and get the file.

I just want something cheap and cheerful like the NTL webspace, but anonymous.

Can anybody suggest anything that would do it?

check out 4shared.com
you can dump files on there and send a link without revealing your true name.

useful for transferring larger files too.

There's lots of either free file sharing sites or free webhost sites. Just search the forum as it's been asked lots and lots of times before

That's a slick answer, but is that what I need, a free webhost site?

This is what it says at 4shared:-

Use a handy 4shared email service to send a sharing link. Simply specify email addresses of the people you are going to share files with and choose the files.
The link will be attached to your email and then used as an easy way to access your shared files.

I can already do this with drivehq.com

Sharebee.com is another well know site

Re: Explain about FTP please.

For purely files a file share will do, if though you also wish to have a few webpages up then a webhost (which will be like your NTL webspace) will do both (though best to read the small print as some free hosts don't allow files other than standard web pages..

For file sharing there's places like Rapidshare

For webhosts try this site as it lists them all

@kymmy
Yes, I know that there are file sharing sites.
And I know that there are web-hosting sites.

If you need "free" hosting - I could sort you out 50MB of free space. Drop me a PM.

Re: Explain about FTP please.

as my previous reference to FTP was not to your liking, and you wanted and explanation of FTP (according to the rather abrupt, negative and private repu, i mean 'message' that I got from you), try THIS one instead.

silly me for thinking that an explanation of an FTP app on your machine could be answered by the application's help file, or indeed by the homepage of the application's vendors (which my first link gave many examples and links to)... oh well, we live and learn.
