Sounds very good to me, but how far will they stretch such a network, i can only foresee it expanding across the city centre due to the sheer size of the city.

Yeah, but the other FibreCity's don't have any ISPs yet so isn't this a bit of non-news until some ISP announcement is made? I mention this as it was H2O that did the infrastructure for the FibreCities.

There's also the DigitalRegion Project in South Yorkshire that is still in its infancy but looks at providing next generation access (fibre) to Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheffield areas, connecting every home/business to it.

PlusNet are based in Sheffield, I wonder if they will have any involvement in it?

They have been trying to find an ISP for ages now and no one wants to work with them.

Actually, i think there was an ISP in Sheffield dealing in Fibre. Ask4 or something?
They supply luxury apartments with Fibre-based services.
Who knows, maybe they will be a part of this?

Yeah, Ask4 mainly cover student blocks and luxury apts. They are a good company from what I've heard though.

As above, ask4 do already have a working fibre ring in Sheffield and it's supplied by H2O. The BBC article has some info missing, http://www.sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk/...ibe.5463552.jp is a bit better.

The article implies no cap like Virgin use or am I just misreading this, is it just advertising speak.

dark fibre is all well and good but without an easy way for a community to access that and light it up for your (wireless-) backhaul/synchronous connections to become your own private carrier, Co-Location, Co-op etc, we are going nowere.

you dont need an ISP for that OC as you could buy the end kit and connect it up yourself in theory but dark fibre isnt exactly off the shelf consumer friendly today, so its far easyer if there are some 3rd party to do it for your community.

It's a bit of misguided journalism by the looks of it. Of course the fibre ring does have a finite amount of bandwidth depending on what kit is terminating it however this kit is upgradeable if required. At the moment it's used to supply connectivity to multiple tenant units and businesses, unless you have big pockets you can't connect your detached house to it... :)

I contacted them several weeks ago to suggest we'd be interested in working with them, I also spoke to one of their account managers a couple of weeks later.

Not had any contact from them at all so if they are looking for an ISP partner, they're not looking that hard.
