That all sounds like a horrendous nightmare. I never realised that Newquay had changed so much from the family holiday destination I remember. :(

sad thing is the residents can't fight back i heard a account of this just the other day from my mate

"there was a girl about to go to the loo on my front garden i came out the house and asked her in a polite manner to move it not ones but twice when she did not move herself i moved her off my property the next with in 12 hours the cops where around to question me about it while the girl got of scot free"

just shows you that the drinks companies hold the real power

Re: Newquay invaded by drunken mobs

I'm in Newquay at the moment staying with my parents. I would say that Newquay has changed for the worse over the last 10 to 15 years. It used to be a resort aimed at families during the summer and the elderley during the winter months, but now is almost exclusively aimed at groups of young teenagers & adults. During the off-season the population is about 19 - 20k, but during the summer another 100 - 120k people flock to the area. Surprisingly, the local police force doesn't suddenly grow 6 times it's normal size.

I don't doubt that places that have a week long mardi gras or carnival don't face the same problems, but there is normally an increase in policing for the length of those events, they're concentrated in a small area of the town and the event lasts maybe a week at most. The season here is 4 - 5 months long, the trouble is all over the town and there is no sudden addition of hundreds of extra coppers.

Thankfully a lot of the guest houses at the top of my parents road have been returned to private residences or gone bust. I remember one summer when all the cars up the road had their windows smashed, windscreen wipers destroyed etc. as some drunken idiots returned home after a night of 'fun'. My parents have had people parking in their drive, blocking access to their garage and one such vehicle was left there for a total of 4 days over a weekend. The opposite side of the road has no parking restrictions, so it used to regularly have people sleeping in cars, VW vans etc while they came down for a week. Not very nice to walk out of your house and see drunken people crawling out of the cars/vans and going to the toilet in the gutter.

The local council shares some of the blame. It used to be run by Restormel council, which was based in St. Austell. They used to happily take all the local rates and taxes from Newquay and spend them on St. Austell and try and charge any businesses wanting to move into the town huge business rates. So gradually all the family orientated shops, high street names and facilities left Newquay (It has been without a cinema for about 10 years now, which St. Austell has a large multiscreen cinema and the biggest high street shop for years was Woolworths). Now the local councils have been banded together into a countywide council. The drain of money from Newquay to St. Austell has stopped. Suddenly a cinema is coming back to Newquay and Sainsburys has opened up in place of the crappy old Somerfield. It's still not perfect though. The majority of shops are seasonal surf/bucket and spade shops selling cheap tat. Woolies is still vacant right in the centre of town and the majority of businesses in town are bars and pubs, which is half the problem.

It's not the town I remember being in as a child and most of the time when we are down visiting my parents we don't even go into town, opting to instead go to Truro, because the town centre is a warzone most evenings and too busy to walk in during the day for the small number of shops worth going into.

I've been to Newquay quite a few times over the past few years, the place was and is full of young people having a good time, in the pubs and night clubs and on the beach during the daytime, mainly watching the surfing. I've never seen any trouble there and in my earlier visits (going back 10 years) I spent every night in the pub and in nightclubs. It never felt like a family resort to me, there's other resorts spread around the area much more suitable for families.

Newquay used to get a bit wild in the summer, but when nearby RAF St Mawgan was fully operational (together with the US Marines that were also there) things tended to stay quieter than if just civvies were about.

All hail the Vic Bars!!!

Fond memories of Newquay... 1973 & 1974, getting drunk every night and partying. No violence though. Saw The Equals and Geordie on stage down there and the Radio Luxemburg roadshow :D

I worked in Newquay in 1972-1974 and have lovely memories. The place has changed so much and for the worse but the biggest travesty is what they have done to the Sailors Arms, it has had all it's old Cornish charm ripped out, such a shame

It's worse than that!
There is a run of clubs leading into the town that want to provide fun for stags and hens, especially, and they are adjacent/very close to the spot where too many young lose their life.
A lot of the fun is harmless but there are extremes.
It's yet another struggling sea-side town - with some wonderful locals and scenery.
So sad.

Got a very strong caution, which might have been an arrest, outside the perimeter fence in latish 70s - because I had a camera that I wasn't using.
An aside - but happy times :)

Are you Sure they didn't get more Raucous??? ;

Oh! and got stung the only ever time by a weaver fish there at low tide - not to be recommended :D
Mawgan Porth that is.
I'll shut up :D

'tis not good to see headstones and greetings and promises from friends on a cliffside.

Completely agree, I visited Newquay before and after the changes and it became bog-standard yoof pub with the odd bit of decoration giving a hint of its former self. It may have changed again since then but it really was an excellent pub with a great atmosphere and should never have been touched.

I have a relative who lives in Newquay, and it has gone totally mad, quite a change from the past.
