WGR614v9 Upnp not working! No media sharing

Hello Everyone,

I have a Netgear router WGR614v9 supplied by Virgin media.

I have a desktop, a laptop and a Ps3 and psp which all use the network.
I can not share media or files across the network. whilst media sharing and network discovery are turned on. All have access to internet and download ok.

The most info I got on the problem was from the Ps3 when I did a connection test with it. it said "Upnp : not available nat type: 2

The router may not support IP Fragments. Gaming access maybe restricited contact router manufacturer."

So I contacted virgin media who said basically if your Internet works then were not intrested! they gave me a premium rate number to phone for general pc assistance.

I then phoned Netgear who were very helpfull. After going through all the settings with them they told me it was because the Firmware is put on the routers by virgin media and is not there firmware, so they can not advise me further they told me to contact Virgin media again.

Virgin told me to reset the router which has atleast changed the test results for the Ps3. Ps3 is not showing any errors. But still Media sharing is not working! neither is network discovery.

My computers are on the same workgroup also.

when I take these computers upto my mum's where she has a netgear router which is a DG.... something or other and is also virgin. media sharing works fine with nothing to change. the network names and passwords are the same for both houses so can someone pleas help me and tell me where I am going wrong or is it Virgin's Firmware thats stopping media sharing.

Are the machines Vista, XP or a combination of both?

In the Netgear page under Advanced Settings, do you have UPnP?
Is it ticked?
Mine has the following
Turn UPnP On (ticked)
Advertisement Period (in minutes) 30
Advertisement Time To Live (in hops) 4

UPnP Portmap Table
Active Protocol Int. Port Ext. Port IP Address
YES UDP 52577 52577 192.168.1.3
YES TCP 33521 33521 192.168.1.6
YES UDP 33521 33521 192.168.1.6
YES TCP 59965 59965 192.168.1.6
YES UDP 50386 50386 192.168.1.5
YES TCP 56431 56431 192.168.1.5
YES UDP 59466 59466 192.168.1.7

the only part that is diffrent in mine is the active ports mine says :

Active Protocol Int. Port Ext. Port IP Address
YES UDP 49152 49152 192.168.1.4
and that is it only one active port

in port forwarding I have for Ps3 ports 53 - 18806

and downloading 55100 - 55200

The only port forwarding I have setup is for Blizzard downloads to hubby's machine.
I didn't enter any of the settings above, I'm assuming the router did it automatically.
All my comps see each other and we can all share files, although it did take a lot of messing about. Vista's meant to be easier to configure sharing but I found it easier on XP.
Perhaps try the Vista troubleshooter.

I have tried diagnose connection problems and windows cant find a fault.
as they say vista is meant to be easier but with out changing anything I can get it too work on a network in another house. I seems to me that it is the router that is at fault and not a set up problem with the PC.

Also in router page at WAN setup netgear got me to change the MTU size from 1500 to 1450 then to 1400.

at 1450 that is where Upnp is showing as available but no network traffic. at 1400 or 1500 upnp is not available

in Upnp portable mapping I am only shown one active port. But I have 3 Pc's accessing the internet at the time. So it seems port mapping is not working properly. either

My MTU size is 1500, never changed it from the default.

Re: WGR614v9 Upnp not working! No media sharing

I Reset the router back to factory settings then installed VM wireless manager then uninstalled it.
I have not put in any port forwarding or changed any settings in the router. when tested on Ps3 no errors found on connection test. But it still cant find any media servers.

when I plug the ethernet cable into the laptop, in network I can find the desktop computer but can not access it. windows network diagnostics says network Diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response. and (Windows found a problem that could not be repaired automatically contact network adimistator).

Don't shout at me if this is a "Grandmother and Eggs" point, but have you checked to see if it is a firewall issue on the supplying PC?

AH! Well you were right thanks for suggesting it I was about to get a new router.
I have reverted back to windows firewall as Mcaffee wont let upnp work at all even when I open the ports in firewall settings so it has benn switched off.
I am now watching video on ps3 that is stored on an external hard drive on a desktop upstairs. So it really is working am very happy and gratefull THANK YOU ALL!!!!!

Glad you got it working. To be honest I don't run a firewall on any of the (7) PC's behind my router. I let the Routers firewall do the protecting, working on the assumption that if they can get through that then a software firewall on a PC is not going to be much of a problem for them!!

Re: WGR614v9 Upnp not working! No media sharing

UPnP doesn't have to be active on a router for UPnP to work internally on the network, it only makes a difference if you are expecting it to work over the Internet, IE automatically forwarding BitTorrent ports etc

Except a decent host based software firewall will provide egress filtering as well, thus protecting you from having your data exfiltrated or any nasties from contacting their home server in the event that a machine is compromised by a worm/trojan.

I am having the exact same problem but even with firewall disabled completely, my PS3 cannot detect any media servers, nor does the PS3 display as a device in the 'media sharing' menu on Media Player 11. I am using XP. Anyone got any more ideas?

Thanks.
