XP or Vista?

I have XP on my desktop and Vista Home Premium on my new laptop, and I have the opportunity to "downgrade" my laptop to XP. Now, although I prefer XP I am having second thoughts about changing my laptop to XP.

The reason I am having second thoughts is the ease with which my laptop - Lenovo - latched on to my newly set up wireless network. I didn't have to do a thing to the laptop it just found the network in seconds. The thing I don't like about Vista is the lack of Outlook Express. It came with Outlook, but I will have to buy this in sixty days, and I don't particularly like it. I have installed Thunderbird as my e.mail client. If I change to XP will it be as good for wireless networking?

What would you do?

Vista calls it's equivalent of Outlook Express by the snappy title of "windows mail". Are you sure that wasn't available?

Be careful with downgrading new laptops. You might find that not everything works as there won't be XP drivers for the hardware

Yes, it has got Windows Mail but I thought it was just linked to Hotmail. I want to stick with my normal Blueyonder e.mail.

How would I set up Windows Mail for Blueyonder with my extra email addresses?

Vista is perfectly fine to use now... especially with Sp1, and even better now with SP2.... which im using.

Load Vista, then use MS's own (free) Virtual Machine program to make an XP machine within it. Win7 is going that way apparently to allow backwards compatability.

I have Virtual Machines for 98SE and XP on my Vista machine... mainly for gaming.

Just follow this guide for each e-mail. You should be able to add multiple accounts into Windows Mail

However I would suggest downloading Windows Live Mail - works basically the same but will be the only option going forward

????? Really? Why is this?

Re: XP or Vista?

1) because Microsoft can update the Live Applications quicker than the Windows releases.

2) Because of Europe not liking the amount of bundling Microsoft do.

In Windows 7 stuff like Mail, Gallery, Movie Maker are not included by default. They have to be downloaded

So if you get yourself used to Windows Live Mail rather than the Windows Mail included in Vista - then if/when you end up on Windows 7 (or above) you won't have to relearn it

Thanks for all of your help. I'm on my laptop now, and I've set up my e.mail on Windows Mail. It was quite easy, but I had to search for Windows Mail: it just was not visible.

In the circumstances I think I'll stick with Vista otherwise I may end up in a mess.
