ok, excuse me being ignorant, but..
what do all these mean, and should I do some sort of scan, and with what (preferably free!) ?

You'll probably find that they are all legit things that windows bloatware has running in the background, doing nothing but eating memory (hence why you need so much of it) on the offchance that you might start up some program a millisecond faster.
I usually get out :google: if I'm unsure of anything and see the PC misbehaving. |

They all look like normal processes to me.
Some you don't need, but you have to decide which ones you don't need running. You can get a good idea from here. http://www.anti-spy.info/file/index.html |
