Locked Laptop

Looking for some help please.

My daughter has forgotten her password and we don't have a password reset disk. Am I going to have to wipe the laptop?

It's Vista Home Premium.

Have you got another user on that laptop? If you have and it had Administrator privileges, then you can log into that and change her password.

There is a way using some boot-up tools to reset the password, but they are really only for people who know what they are doing.

There are a few ways that may do it here:

Hirens boot disc if its not in your arsenal it should be ;) I also have a disc called active boot disc that does not have copywritten contents

Thanks guys, I followed the link from Sir John's post, I downloaded the iso and burned it to disk was fine until it asked for the registry directory then it wouldn't take anything i put in.

Re: Locked Laptop

Did it find the partition? If you have more than one partition (e.g. a 'recovery' partition), did you select the correct one? The default registry directory is NORMALLY correct for Vista.

Re: Locked Laptop

It found 2 partitions, selected the first one which said BOOT at end of it.
Told me it was wrong so selected 2 and it seemed to load everything fine until it asked for the registry giving an example of Windows/System32/config which is right as I checked it on other daughter's identical laptop.

Not sure then. This has saved my bacon a couple of times, though I must admit that was on NT and XP rather than Vista.

There is a linux program out n about on the net, within 2 mins gets your passwords for you but im affraid i dont have it. It's dos based and is bootable.

But there is always UBCD, or Hirens boot cd, as Zinglebarb says :) that way u can edit the registry how you like :D

Re: Locked Laptop

Hirens is by far the easier one to use imo.

Boot to disc.
9 next
4 password and reg
1 active password changer
1 choose drive
its normally the 0
enter
pick account you want
put a little X in clear password
press Y
done.
