Ubuntu 9.04 is out.

http://distrowatch.com/ links to 9.04 of Ubuntu and Kubuntu, other official ubuntus usually follow a bit later.

Doesn't seem "front page" news any more for the non Linux sites, i.e. not mentioned on BBC.

Do Ubuntu not care enough to publicise now, i.e. they're complacent, or has the mainstream lost interest in Linux again?

I'm surprised I thought it would get more popular with netbooks, maybe a lot more ppl go for the XP ones. Which is a shame 'cos I saw the stats somewhere and Ubuntu said they've put a lot of effort into making things better for Ubuntu on netbooks, where as M$ deliberately are keeping XP alive as a netbook option for netbooks rather than Vista, but Windows 7 should be better than Vista on one.

they've redesigned the pages
http://www.ubuntu.com/ (netbook version advertised on homepage)
http://www.kubuntu.org/
and easily seem to be coping with demand again, torrent is downloading pretty fast.

oops, meant to put this in "general IT discussion", can you move please mods, thanks

Been seeding the 64Bit Desktop ISO for a few hours now :)

Sadly not got a CD drive atm to test it.

Re: Ubuntu 9.04 is out.

Thank Thomas.

I've just finished downloading th i386 Kubuntu alternate, as i want to update my Ubuntu install on my laptop to see if they've mad kde4 good in Ubuntu yet. I like it on openSUSE on my main PC.

Druchii, can't you extract the .iso to a usb device and install off that? i think the netbook page has instructions how to do it for netbook install. Actually have a look at http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ may have some ideas, or just use virtualbox so you can use the .iso in a virtual machine.

You could install with wubi.

I installed the RC with wubi yesterday, works perfectly.

Ubuntu ships with wubi built in or at least the last version I got did. It gives you an option to install inside windows. Its wubi without downloading wubi

Ahh, I didn't know that, I've always used the wubi installer and let it download the distro for me.

Cheers mate, I'll try to remember that for next time.

Make most if not all Linux distros usb installable, use linked app to intall and make bootable from pendrive usb, then install from the desktop "install option"

Does not work with all BSD distros, sadly :(

Unetbootin

Got it running in Virtualbox. Is there a trick to getting the addons to install? I can never get it to work in Linux.

admars 25-04-2009 22:58

Re: Ubuntu 9.04 is out.

in virtual box, mount the addons cds so that your virtual machine can see the "cd" then install it

Re: Ubuntu 9.04 is out.

Tried that, and the little Icons suggest they are doing something, but never do.

I have tried Linux and can't get used to it

If you are a VM customer you can get your fix on our mirrors http://ubuntu.virginmedia.com/releases/

I don't really like KDE4 though it's still better than Gnome (personal opinion).

I always use the alternate install CD since I don't want to change my Grub setting in a different Linux setup.
Also note that you may not be able to boot ext4 partitions from older Grubs.

That's how Windows does it, never works in Linux. Sorted it.

Open a Terminal and do sudo apt-get install dkms

Mount the addon and it puts an Icon on the desktop, open that and there is a file called vboxlinuxadditions-x86run

I just dragged that into the Terminal and run with sudo.

sudo '/media/cdrom0/vboxlinuxadditions-x86run'

And that did it.

i've had similar problems. Whenever I take a look at it I load it up on a live CD and then think what would I do with my PC if it was windows. That would usually involve playing a game which would be windows based so it doesn't really work for me.

Think for some people it is great though and unlike windows doesn't seem as bloated so runs quicker
