would this graphics card

the graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 and the motherboard is a Asus P5SD2-VM

The GC looks like and seems to be (from a quick google) AGP X8 compliant so therefore wont fit the Asus.

Edit**
And to answer your second Q, No PCI-E X16 is not backwards compatible with AGP. But PCI-E x16 v2 is backwards compatible with v1 of the slot type. IE you can use a v1 card in a v2 slot and vice versa.
