If he's going for 4870's then i'd assume he's looking for an LGA775 board.

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s....html?ASU-P5QE

I'd recommend the P5Q-E. It's £10 more expensive than the lower model, but it has better mofset heatpipe cooling. In Crossfire, the cards will run 8x PCI-e 2.0 but with 2x 4870's that wont make a difference from x16 lanes. Theres no point in buying an X48 board unless you're running Quadfire.

Re: crossfire mainboard

how can you assume that though there are plenty of crossfire AMD boards.

This time its a correct assumption but there is no sure thing :)

I would also push an Asus P5 board been happy with my Pro

Personally though I think I would pay the extra and buy an X2 dunno why its just what I would do

Re: crossfire mainboard

Because there seems to be the general consensus that pairs Intel with ATI, some people automatically think of intel when crossfire is mentioned so i assumed he would be looking in that direction ;)

Glad I do not follow the concensus ;) as seen in other threads I actually quite like AMD again. I wouldnt recommend them for the top top end but you can save money and still build a powerfull machine using them. I quite like the idea of a Phenom II with a AMD 790 chipset and a 4870 X2 myself :)

Aye neither do i, but a lot of people who have had computers before but don't know there hardware, in my experience, have connected the two in the past ;)

If i was in the market for a PC myself i'd probably go Phenom II, but i've had my Q6600 for 2 years in September and it still isn't falling behind and drives my GTX295 to stock Nehalem numbers in games, although i do have it clocked @ 3.6. I think my next major upgrade will be to an 8-core Nehalem.
