new motherboard?

hello,
hope someone can help, i've got a problem with my sons computer, when turned on it lights up , case and cpu fan run , hard drive spins , but no signal goes to monitor , i've tried the hard drive in another computer and it works fine .
the motherboard in my sons comp has on board graphics .
i think its probably the motherboard but thought i'd ask someone elses opinion before i go and splash the cash on a new one.
any ideas anyone
thanks
andy.

Re: new motherboard?

can you try a different PSU just in case? it certainly does look like mobo

thaks for quick reply
the psu fans are running ,everything lights up, is there any way to test the psu ?
i dont have a spare psu , and dont fancy taking my comp apart to use that one .

Re: new motherboard?

it does not matter if the fans are running there could still be a fault. 9 times out of 10 the symptoms you describe would point to the mobo but there is the 1 time its not.

ok just tried another psu from my other computer , just managed to get the cables to stretch without having to remove psu from case , just the same as before , looks like it is the mobo , i'm off to buy another one . thanks for your help.

Just be sure that the Motherboard connectors from the Power supply will fit the new Mobo, ie, make sure the 20/24 pin and the 4 pin 12 v ones are on it.;)

Its all been said realy, the only other thing left is to reset the cmos, unplug the power cable, remove the battery from the mobo, & short the cmos reset jumper. Its a long shot.

Sometimes a small screw can get loose inside and jam twixt m/board and case causing problems.

If all you are getting is a blank screen, and the graphics are "on board", have you tried a PCI graphics card? Had the same issue once with an old PC, plugged in a PCI graphics card, and it worked great. Turned out the onboard graphics were dead.

if you remove the battery you do not need to short the cmos ;)
