Unidentified network when plugging into ethernet port

1 Attachment(s)
Here's what it looks like on my screen.

My wireless seems to work but i prefer to use the ethernet port as its faster and holds connection better, Does anybody know how to fix it as i can't get a connection with it.

Help would be much appreciated, Thanks, Dan

Re: Unidentified network when plugging into ethernet port

Disable the wireless first.

Then make sure you are using DHCP (Automatically Receive an IP Address) Then do the following:

Go to Start > Run and type in
Code:

cmd [enter]
then type in the command window
Code:

ipconfig /all
and look for the IP ADDRESS line. It should start 192.168 - if it starts 169.xx.xx.xx then theres possibly a problem with your ethernet cable, and try a different one.

Feel free to copy/paste the command window results for further diags.

Re: Unidentified network when plugging into ethernet port

did u try a different ethernet cable?

my friend had a similar issue but it was his wireless that wouldn't work. turned out to be a router issue. I would suggest taking the router out of the equation as well and see if your pc can connect directly to the modem ok

Re: Unidentified network when plugging into ethernet port

It was all working great yesterday, But this morning the modem was messing up so i plugged this ethernet cable directly into the back of the modem and the other end into my laptop reset the modem and was working but having connection issues as my modems screwed. (Getting new 50mb broadband this Friday so il get a new modem but il keep my router as its better than the one virgin media supply).

Once i done all that i unplugged the ethernet cable from the modem, plugged in the ethernet router cable into the modem and plugged the ethernet for my laptop into the back of the router and thats when it started coming up with unidentified network.

Dont know if that's much help to you but i might see about reseting everything and setting it all back up again?

Thanks for the info so far please let me know what you think. Thanks, Dan

Re: Unidentified network when plugging into ethernet port

try this
unplug everything turn of pc,remove all ethernet cables
restart modem after 60secs, connect ethernet cable modem to router then restart router connect ethernet cable to pc and restart pc do this in that order and you should pick up a connection
most laptops/pcs have a problem switching from cable to wireless without a restart of router and modem you will probably have to disable the wireless adapter aswell
hope this helps
