network Camera option
 

Hello All,

Had some attacks on the rear of my house with air rifles/pellet guns and i am trying to track down who is doing this so im after a camera i can connect to my network (either hard wired or wifi is fine) that will record video or at least image snapshots every few seconds (or when motion is detected)

I wish to save these movies/pictures on my QNAP 209 NAS so storage isnt a problem.

The plan is to have it running point out towards the rear of my house and then come home see if any windows have air rifles bullet marks in them if not delete the days footage if yes have a look through.

Can anyone suggest some camera options? i dont wish to spend a fortune the new windows are expsive enough ;)

Umm - I think you might have to have a notice up to passers-by explaining that they may be on camera - something to do with Human Rights and/or Data protection no doubt...

has a list of cameras that work with the 209's surveillance software (assuming you have the latest firmware - earlier firmware didn't have the surveillance feature built in).

yeah i read that, at the back of my house u cant see anyone unless they do some serious climbing onto some garages (thats what i think is going on) so to be honest with ya im not caring much about someones rights as they are going out the way to ruin my house ;)

i think teh qnap ones have to use a special qnap storage device, thats what it looked like from the pictures but i will look into it.
Thanks for the links. i think if the camera can FTP the files that will work ok i can setup the NAS as a FTP server (i think it is by default).

I do hope you realise I was slightly tongue-in-cheek....

The only thing I would say is that most cameras and specially at night won't have sufficient quality to provide an identifiable picture to the police. I used to work in a travel agency with a foreign currency bureau and we had security cameras with recorded pictures on professional tapes - even those were pretty poor quality and you would be hard pressed to identify anyone.

yeah i understood i even winked ;)

quality is an issue seems the more money you spend the better it can get, teh attacks happen (so far) while im at home and in the middle of the day between 3-5.

Bit of a puzzler the latest one i cant figure out how they managed to break the bottom floor window they did you can only see it if u stand in my garden :)

I have one of these monitoring the front of my house / garage and can't fault it.

Anything that moves and it will take a picture and email it to you. You can also view it live via your PC on your LAN, or from anywhere in the world.

I chose this one as it's got pan and tilt you can control from your PC. WIFI pan and tilt versions cost £200 plus .... mine was only £60 but the price has gone up.

It works unbelievably well for 60 quid and has a bucket load of settings to play with including the sensitivity of the email trigger.

Can you output images to NAS (as per OP request)? I had an IP camera with good specs, but it needed to be tied to a "live" computer to make full use of the facilities.

Yes .... it's hard to believe and I was quite sceptical but it's got a built in web server! I've got a LAN cable out the back of my route, plugged in to the back of my camera and that's it. It's pretty cool to be able to view your house on your phone when you're sat on the other side of the country.

or u can get a few friends and all have air riffles and stay up and let the battle commence i guarentee they wont come back :-)
