using a dvd recorder with freeview with virgin media cable

Hi
I have just bought a dvd recorder with in built freeview and am trying to set it up with my cable tv. I can access the cable tv and record from it but I cannot access freeview tv channels. I am in an area with freeview reception. Could anyone tell me if i can access both systems? If I can, then could I record from the freeview channels and watch a different channel on cable?:)
Thank you in advance

Welcome to the forum, I've moved your post to the freeview forum :)

For freeview you need an external antenna pointing towards one fo the public transmitters (same ones as youre normall bbc/itv/c4/c5 signals come from) No freeview digital signals are available via the VM cable apart from the ones you can pick up on your VM box.

Which does the dvd recorder have a SCART input? If so then use that for your cable recordsings and the RF from an antenna for your freeview..
