Windows XP Service Pack 3 question.
 

Afternoon all.

Right, slight problem. This morning I thought it would be a good idea to slipstream my genuine copy of XPSP2 with the recent Service Pack 3. Last time I done a slipstream was with an old XP disc and SP2 using a programme called Auto Streamer 1.0.33 which worked perfectly.

I have just finished installing my new copy of XP and while right clicking my computer > properties shows my rig as running SP3, my comp is still running I.E 6 and Media Player 9

I also use Auto Patcher (i know its old but it serves me well) and it dosnt show the new I.E or Media Player listed for installation (probably cause it thinks SP3 includeds)

i thought sp3 included these :|

any help would mucho appreciated. :)

SP3 isn't a true service pack IIRC. It was just a compilation of updates crammed into one, so you didn't have to download a load of separate updates.

I use a programme called nLite to sliptream my XP. You can use that to add newer versions of Media Player and Internet Explorer into the installation I think.

thanks guys..

its trial and error at the minute. i think im best installing my original disc with sp2, run auto patcher to install updates and the new i.e and media player - then get sp3.

This thread has gotten me thinking actually :)

I'm going to have a go at creating a fully patched unnattended installer for my netbook, all I need to work out is how to get it to run from USB rather than CD (the netbook doesn't have a CD drive).

You can slipsteam SP3 into an SP2 disc, and make it fully unattended using nLite. Using nLite, you can also save it as an ISO image, rather than burning it directly to a disc.

If you put a bootable ISO image onto a USB drive, then booted from USB though a BIOS boot menu...would that work?

Don't think so, think you'd need some additonal tool to get the USB to boot from the ISO.

Would the Engineer Boot Disc, or Hiren's Boot disc contain such a tool?

I would think as long as you copy all the hidden files and all the directories off the CD/Out of the ISO you should be able to install from a bootable USB

That does look like the answer.

Wonder if it's possible to make it bootable within Windows. I mean, if I copied my Office installation disc over to the USB stick, and use a similar method as the above, could the USB stick run the setup similar to how a CD/DVD drive does?

Your best bet would be to put the Office installation files on a USB stick, install something like Daemon Tools to create a virtual CD drive, and then run the installer that way.

I tried that on my girlfriends netbook, and the Office installation was having none of it. In the end, I had to make an ISO using a different programme, and use a different mounting tool. Maybe the ISO was damaged? I don't know.

Any way, I'd highly recommend using nLite to sliptream and make unattended installations.

you can just copy the office files and install using the autorun I have office 2003 on my flash drive full of apps and just install it from there anyway

Can you not just copy the I386 folder to a flash drive thats been formatted as a windows boot disc browse to WINNT32 and install it that way?
