Application management, utorrent, ftp and newsgroups
If and when application management does come in how is it supposed to manage utorrent traffic? Especially if the user uses random ports and is using encrypted packets to both recieve and send?
Also are are other ports going to be application managed like ftp (port 21) and sftp port (port 22)? And what about newgroup ports like open standard port (119) and encrypted port (port 563)? In my opinion ftp ports should be left alone as ftp could be considerd more legit than newsgroups. |
Re: Application management, utorrent, ftp and newsgroups
As I am aware its going to be using DPI to sort out the packets, but I limited on my knowledge.

*Cracks knuckles*
A few ways torrents can be done. Most basic and ineffective way is to throttle the default torrent ports (6881 - 6999). Next on the list is to throttle based on the number of connections a client has open from a single port - if you're opening a shedload of connections from the same port it's P2P. The most resource heavy way is just to look at every single packet until a flow is confirmed as a torrent. A more elegant way is to snoop traffic between torrent clients and trackers then throttle based on the IPs and ports that the tracker provides the client when it joins the swarm. Rest entirely depends on the policies that are configured on the device, and please give me the FTPz you leech from kip ;) |
Re: Application management, utorrent, ftp and newsgroups
they should leave the newsgroupers alone
it's the 'uploaders' that are killing the network (thank you BBC) |
