US scientists relieved as Obama lifts ban on stem cell research

But the research raises ethical questions, because it uses human embryos - typically conceived in the lab - which are destroyed so that stem cells may be harvested. Critics say it creates human life only to end it.

I for one am glad that this kind of research again has a green light.

I'm with you on this one. there is so much scope for some amazing developements thanks to this kind of research. though it's funny how some people go on about animal testing, so we test on 'humans' (or at least, their cells), but that's no good either!

difficult one to win, but an important one to do.

You may find this informative
"Expand use of human embryos for any research permitted under federal law subject to the following limits: the embryos —
  • are created for fertility treatment purposes;
  • are not suitable for implantation or are in excess of clinical needs;
  • would be discarded unless used for research;
  • were donated by the person seeking fertility treatment."

Though this is really a public message that what is "currently" the goal is proof of concept and not any actual experimentation.

This will have to be the next step in the process, else what is the point of the research?

Thanks for the link!
