Moving Virgin Box - advice on extending cable
Hi
Apologies for what is probably a standard question, but I have searched the internet and found the information a little confusing (the fact the so many cable types have been discontinued is one factor). I am redecorating and plan to move my Virgin box to the other side of the room. I therefore require new cable. Key points: Joined Virgin around 6 months ago I want to buy decent quality cable I don’t want to extend, but rather replace the cable (see above :)) I will pass the cable through the under floor cavity which is very damp so I require something resistant to moisture (I can pin to the underside of the floorboards if advised) I would prefer to buy the whole thing made up, rather than the component parts if possible (I get the impression the best connectors require specific and costly tools….). I thought I needed WF100 and standard F connectors, but after looking at my existing cable (and further research) I’m less sure. My existing cable (originally installed by engineer) is marked as “UTFC-T100 8185â€. The existing connectors are marked as “PPC EX59 08†(they screw in to the box and the adapter). The box is a “Samsung SMT-2110Câ€. Please let me know if you need anything more |

Re: Moving Virgin Box - advice on extending cable
It's my virgin media TV box (nothing required for router, that is staying where it is).
Thanks - I've been there. The issue is there are several different types (grades) of cable and connectors (some that require different equipment). I also understand some cables are not well suited to damp conditions. So I'm after advice on specifics if you are able to help me on that:) |

Re: Moving Virgin Box - advice on extending cable
I did exactly what you are wanting to do by buying an extension from either Maplin or B&Q, I can't remember which, and fixing it to the underside of the beams under the floor. If the new run isn't too long you'll probably be OK without any attenuation issues. I was. It is worth, however, testing it out by connecting up the new length of cable to check for signal quality BEFORE you go pulling up floor boards.
Had a tech out to a knackered STB some years later who checked the signal etc with the extension and said it was OK by him too. |
