I'm not sure if this is in the correct section .... to me they all didn't feel 'right'

We are thinking about moving down to Cornwall where they haven't got gas piped to everyone let alone Virgin cable!!!!!!!!!!!

So having got used to having my services - TV / Phone / Broadband via cable and really enjoying the V+ box ... it looks like they will have to go out of the window!!!

I thought I would ask you for the best thing to do then thought it is a cable forum ............:dunce:

So here's hoping ......... :confused:

If you know the postcodes of any houses you're checking out, use the Virgin Media Postcode Checker.

If you don't, then I don't know what to say. How long is left on your contract with VM?

I think its going to be around Bodmin ... we were looking at Newquay / Wadebridge as well.

Luckily for us our 12 month contract is coming to an end .... so there don't seem to be any problems there ...

Just the problem of getting a similar service to our Virgin Media cable without the cable!!!! (and Sky costs!!!!!!!)

Moving off-net when you've got used to it is pretty dire in my experience. Fortunately, all of my town bar 2 new estates is cabled, so hopefully I'll never have to go through the cold turkey experience!

I checked with a mate from Bodmin area and VM is not available.

I didn't expect it would be ..... oooooooh ...... its not going to be nice sorting it out :(

I've checked a couple of postcodes out already ---- so it looks like an alternative

Saltash is the only place in Cornwall that has cable.

I moved from a cabled urban house to an uncabled rural one a few years ago. we don't have gas here and at the time there was no broadband either. It was a bit of a shock.

Take this opportunity to consider whether you really want to watch the extra channels you can only get with a Virgin or Sky subscription. If you only have V+ for the ability record stuff, bear in mind that you can now get the same functionality with both Freesat and Freeview, and neither of those services will charge you a monthly subscription, unlike Sky+, which is now your only other option.

If you really do want access to subscription channels then Sky is your only choice. If not, I would advise you to think very seriously about buying the Freesat+HD box. Freesat will be adding BBC iPlayer to the service later this year, which will give you the nearest you're going to get to an equivalent to Virgin's VOD service. iPlayer via Freesat requires a broadband internet connection.

... which is the next issue you need to consider. You are going to have to get ADSL internet as there's no cable. Your options depend on what is installed at your local telephone exchange and how far your new home is from it. Use the checker at http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ to find out what you can get.

As for telephone, well if Samknows reveals that other providers have installed broadband equipment in your local telephone exchange, some of them may also be able to directly sell you a phone line as well. Otherwise it's off to BT for your phone line, although you still have the option to choose a different service provider to carry your calls over that line.

Saltash was one place we hadn't considered ... but there might be a good reason to ..... now!!! :)

Thanks for that info Chris. Its going to give us something to think about. We hadn't actually used many of the other channels ... apart from Gems TV .... but don't tell hubby!!!!

I'm not sure how good Sky is down that area (I will have to nip into the Sky Forum) because of the constant mizzle down in that area - it could well affect the signal (I'm thinking)

You won't have any problem with satellite reception in Cornwall. Freeview aerial reception may be more of an issue, if it's hilly. That's (partly) why I'm recommending Freesat rather than Freeview.

Thanks Chris ... all info which is going to be very useful!!!!

I can't imagine moving and having to sort out all the phone / broadband / tv the next couple of days !!!!! :shocked:

Saltash is across the bridge from Plymouth,so you'll have more choice.
