Are routers noisy?

hello complete novice here. the router will be going beside my bed and I am a light sleeper who needs to be in a silent room, so if it's humming or making a low noise it will disturb me. :(

Are routers silent or do they make an audible noise?

Thanks.

btw mine is going to be:

Netgear DG834GT 108Mbps Wireless ADSL

Cheers. :)

My router is a Netgear and sitting right beside my chair, never hear a peep out of it, but I did train it well :D

My Linksys router makes no noise at all, but you might be put off in a bedroom by the lights

most home routers are passive when it comes to cooling

It depends. If your using a Roundover Bit they are relatively quiet, but a Flush Trim Bit will be a bit more noisy, especially if your cutting MDF and don't have a dust extraction unit or.........

There aren't any moving parts in a router is there?

Yes and No...

No as in 99% of routers made for the home have no need for active cooling so have no fans in them.

Yes as in most rack mounted routers tend to have fans in them as they're in a confined enviroment and also have the PSU's built into the cases.

most things in a rack make a 'racket'! sometimes hard to hear yourself think next to a full rack! especially if you are just powering up one or 2 servers!!

Tell me about it.. We have a few servers at work. Most of them run almost silently. Although with 30 of them in the same room, plus assorted network switches, UPSs, tape pickers, NASs, some external RAID systems and the Air Conditioning, the noise in that room is still unbearably loud.

Also, the noise generasted if you need to reboot one!

Ha, our air con failed over night in the server room, coming into 25 screaming servers was deafening! Looked pretty though with all the usual blue lights flashing angry orange :p:
