Possible to lock pc/laptop keyboard like on a mobile phone?
 

Hello.

I work from home and we have a 3 month old kitten who loves walking all over keyboards so I'll go downstairs to make a brew and she's lying on the laptop causing a crescendo of beeping noises and cocked up reminders etc.

I've tried locking the laptop but because I don't use passwords, she usually unlocks it anyway as all she has to do is hit enter.

So, is there anyway to enforce a password on the lock function or perhaps there's a better utility out there?

Not tried it myself...and it's not free :( I solve the problem by having a keyboard tray, which can be quickly retracted when you leave the room (not much use for a laptop, I know).

Also, if you have a password set on your account you can make it mandatory to be entered on unlocking. What OS are you using?

Other alternative - set your laptop so that when you close the lid, nothing happens. You can then close it when you leave the room.

Don't mess about with programs, gadgets is what you need you can never have enough gadgets :D

Thanks, I'll take a look at it.

The laptop has Vista on it. I really don't want to use a password.

Setting the laptop so nothing happens when you shut the lid with the power on is a fantastic idea but will it still make noises? If I'm sat eating my lunch or drinking a brew, I still want to be able to hear e-mails/msn coversations/alerts. I could always try it I suppose.

Yup. All that will happen is that the screen is turned off - everything else carries on as normal. Look in control panel / power options.

Thanks but that wouldn't be right for me. I would want it locked sometimes, even though I might be with it like when I'm eating.

Well you really should use passwords then a simple [WINDOWS]L will lock the keyboard, but shutting the lid is also good as pets can remove key caps if you are not careful.
