HD content or VOD?

So after reading Nialli's HD Petition thread which is more important to you, which should be priority?

HD content or VOD?

Re: HD content or VOD?

I'm caught between a rock and a hard place on this.I want both! Vm's on demand is excellent, and so it should be as they seem to have cornered the market on that one.
But,going forward we are in 2009 now and still no HD,it's a disgrace really.I f you have a HD tv then you naturally want HD programming,AT LEAST SOME! it's like buying sat nav when you don't own a car!

If I had the choice of HD or VOD I'd have to go HD even though I have a V+ box. Perhaps I'd best go to the darkside and have SKY HD.......

What's the poll supposed to mean? Is it a choice between HD channels or HD VOD?

Re: HD content or VOD?

I'm still not sure ... so far as I'm aware, it isn't a case of either one or the other. Virgin is releasing HD content via VOD. There's no point voting for 'VOD' as if to say you want to have VOD instead of HD, because VOD is the way Virgin is delivering most of its HD.

I think the question really ought to be, do people want more linear HD, on channels, or are they happy with more HD via VOD.

Well as I don't have an HDTV, and don't plan on getting one I'm all for VOD!

My parents have an HDTV, but don't live in a cable area so have SkyHD, although it looks very pretty, I really miss VOD when I'm there.

Well I would prefer there be a third choice. HD VOD as that is currently where a lot of the new HD content is due to be added over the coming months.

Re: HD content or VOD?

Overall, I'd prefer more linear HD. The exception to this is the iPlayer. Because BBC HD is such a bizarrely run channel with scheduling clashes and things I think iPlayer HD (that we'll hopefully get later this year) would be a very good addition with 90% of the programmes on for 7 days (never 100% due to rights issues). I think from a customer base point of view a lot of people out there clearly don't get the nature of BBC HD and miss programmes on it and so iPlayer HD would be wildly popular, not least because recordings take up a vast amount of space so a reliable watch once catch up service would be really good.

I would rate HD catch up on demand of other channels (if we ever particularly go down that route) above randomly added snipets of series on tv choice or more on demand.

But first and foremost would be the HD in a linear HD format. One of the reasons for this is movies and sports are such a biggie and aren't ever really going to feature on VOD (filmflex doesn't count as it's expensive). ITV HD and C4 HD show about 3 films a week I'd consider watching if I had them in HD.

I guess it would not be so bad if VOD had C4 HD and ITV HD, but they dont at the moment......

Re: HD content or VOD?

Well the deal signed over a year ago with C4 HD made it sound like we would have C4 HD vod. Unfortunately it's still yet to appear to this day and rather more annoyingly Sky have had a laugh by putting the odd bit on their anytime HD which is superior for HD catch up content (certainly not for SD). There are quite a few things C4 HD have made that are not movies that could have appeared on catch up and I've watched them and would have been extremely pleasant to have the HD option.

ITV is more problematic. Apart from placeholders they don't really do anything in HD apart from Movies and Sports at present. In the fullness of time this will change.

One of the reasons I prefer linear HD is the above about C4 HD, I'm always sceptical about VOD stuff actually being added. Having a linear HD channel means there is no way of weazling out the content.

Linear please. VOD is fine but with V+ you have a PVR sitting there to "tape" when you want it.

My upscaled picture through my HDTV & V+ box is great. No complaints. More HD content on Virgin would be a bonus but only if the programme content was worth watching. Mindeless cr*p will still be mindless cr*p on HD.

For that reason, if having to choose, I’d rather have the large choice we have on VoD than more HD channels, these will come eventually, no point in twisting one’s knickers over the subject, if ye ken whit I mean.

Re: HD content or VOD?

For me anyway it depends what the HD content is. If the HD channels have football or movies on them yes add them infront of VOD. If the channels are just bog standard soaps etc I prefer HD VOD. Like I said in another thread the only thing I watch 'live' now is football. Everything else is either pretaped or on Ondemand. On demand is the way everything is going and Sky are worried about it, You can see it in there anytime package. What Virgin need now is a 'free' On demand movies. Say a choice of 8 movies a week like BT Vision has. There dont need to be new movies just another option.
