Router Security after Virgin Media setup

Having just set up my wireless home network using the Virgin Wireless Manager software that came on the installation disc I'm pleased to say everything is working fine however now I turn my attention to the security of my new home network. I just wanted to know if by using the set up software that virgin supplied my network settings will be secure or is it recommended I go through the routers settings manually and adjust the MAC address filtering / change UPnP settings / assign IP address manually to each of the computers accessing the network etc.

Any Recommendations or useful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The router is the Netgear Wireless G Router - WGR614v9 router supplied by Virgin.

The router set up configures WPA encryption by default - which is fine for most installations

I would agree. WPA for a home user is more than enough. I'd go into details as to why but don't see it as necessary unless someone else feels differently.

You can enhance this feature using MAC filtering but again I have my reasons as to why this is problematic given a scenario that someone has the tools to get past WPA.

i third the aboves. WPA will be fine for normal home use. unless you are transfering / holding sensitive data on your network, that's enough.

Thanks for the advice.
In the future I'm considering hooking up a NAS device to the router so may look in to further security options then.
Thanks again.

You're welcome.

In regard to the NAS device, it should have its own security methods in addition to your own though it is possible to also put it out there naked and alone if not configured correctly.
