NETGEAR Wireless Router WGR614 v9 SPEEDS
I had virgin 20MB broadband installed and they also installed a Netgear WGR614 v9 wireless router. I notice that I have to keep rebooting the wireless router every few days or so because things slow down. I checked the router and I find that the diagram on the underside shows that for 100MBs you should be using a GREEN ethernet cable and for 10MBs you use a Yellow cable. The cable supplied is a Yellow cable and the ethernet connector on the unit is framed in yellow plastic.
Does this mean that I've paid for 20MBs and I'm actually restricting my router to 10MB? Connecting the laptop to the cable modem directly with the blue ethernet cable supplied by virgin shows no problems at all and things bounce around quite quick. Any comments?? DaveLew |
Re: NETGEAR Wireless Router WGR614 v9 SPEEDS
Hi David, and :welcome:
Ethernet cables come in all different shapes, lengths, and colours. I wouldn't necessarily take colour as a good indicator of how fast a cable will operate. Most ethernet cables are good up to 100Mbits/sec so I wuldn't have thought you would have much to worry about to be honest. Does the cable have anything written on it? ---------- Post added at 18:56 ---------- Previous post was at 18:53 ---------- As an addition..... It's quite normal to get a worse speed on wireless than on wired connections, the wireless signal is subject to interference (particularly from other wireless routers/devices) and that can have quite a pronounced affect on the speed/reliability. Something else you might want to consider is how well secured the wireless device is. If you haven't enabled WPA encryption as a minimum you could find some other bugger is using your wireless and that would probably cause it to run more slowly as they sucked up your bandwidth downloading pictures with a lot of pink in them.....if you get what I mean ;) |
Re: NETGEAR Wireless Router WGR614 v9 SPEEDS
Thanks I just found it strange that they seemed to differentiate speeds between the blue and the yellow. I'll have to do some download speed checks. I see there is a programme for that on the forum.
I'll have to munch around a bit ! Thanks again |
