Linksys WRT54G2?
 

Hiya all thinking of getting this router to replace my belkin 54g as i cant afford to upgrade all to N,
Does anyone use this router? is it any good?

I have a basic Linksys WRT45G router, which I'm guessing is the model below yours. It's very good.

The WRT54G2 series routers are the successor to the WRT54G, WRT54GS and WRT54GL ranges. However with no experience of them I have no idea if you can still flash the firmware with third party stuff, or other compatibility things. I like the sleek casing though ;)

hiya all thanx for the response yeah i like the look of a linksy router but ive heard that the range is weaker on the sucessor?
Is the WRT45G still a good router? whats the S and L versions?

If you can get hold of a WRT54GL (L=linux) that is probably the most verstile sinnce it has a linux fimware and was designed to be flashed. The later version of the WRT54G and WRT54GS (Speedstep), had more limited internal RAM which reduced the adaptability. For the majority of users that wouldn't be a problem, but for those who like to play with optimisation of settings, the ability to use third party stuff rules.

The WRT54G original series had external aerials, The WRT54G2 series has internal aerials. That might affect signal stregth for wireless a little?

Whether or not you need third party software can depend on your own use patterns. Many routers now have good setup and configuration options. With my original version WRT54GS version 1 (they I think have got up to version 7 or greater now), I was having issues with torrent connections. DD-WRT firmware allowed me to change some extra tweaks that overcame that. Others find that third party firmware can increase power settings (but that would increase the wireless radiation :erm:), and other wierd and wonderful stuff. As said you only need third party firmware if you come accross a particular issue.

From what I've read, those new WRT54G2s are based on a different chipset, and use VXWorks - i.e. not Linux. They have less RAM, and flash, and aren't designed to be 'upgraded'. Now your best bet is to find a WRT54GL, or original WRT54G. Otherwise, there's a few other compatibles from the likes of Asus et al.

I bought the WRT54GL some months ago and it has been totally stable from the day I plugged it in. (that statement is probably the kiss of death, but I like to live dangerously)

I got mine from Overclockers UK and can recommend them as an online supplier, have a look at the link and the customer comments.

Nick f, I don't know your affordability but I bought last July a D-Link 635 which has 3 sticks purely cos the latest comp I got has n-Draft Wireless and I wanted to buy into the latest tech. It was £54 from Dell online. It has been superb with my Medion PC, Dell laptop and Tosh laptop. Hope that gives you some assurrance.

Hello, I sorry I can't advise you on the router that you mentioned but I have the older version the WRT54G. I've had it he last few years and its worked perfect since day one. I run a laptop via wireless, and an xBox 360 through a ethernet connection (it has 4). As far as i'm aware the firmware can be updated to give it a stronger signal although I've never done this. You can pick this version up for next to nothing on eBay. Might be a cheaper alternative for you.
