Dlink 635 & Virgin cable

I am a total rooky and have tried to install the Dlink 635 to the virgin cable broadband using the installation CD wizard and all was OK until it wouldn't detect the internet asn told me to contact my ISP. I don't see that it is anything to do with virgin as I can connect to the internet when not wired through the Dlink 635. I have seen other threads talking about ISP numbers and the router but how would I enter that in a browser if it won't connect to the internet through the browser?
You can see how much of a rooky I am.
All help and simple instructions most gratefully received as I have a computer and a new laptop that I am keen to get up and working!!
Its now late and I'm fed up having unplugged and rebooted so many times!!

Is everything connected correctly?

Are you trying to do this on a computer that's wired to the router, or on a wireless device? Imo, you should always configure modems/routers wired.

Open up your web browser and type:

192.168.1.1

That should bring up your routers homepage. (You may have to change it depending on what the address of the router is...maybe to like 192.168.0.1, or something similar)

Your initial setup should be like this.

Outside line > Modem > Router > Computer

The outside line is usually a fairly thick white coaxial cable. That connects directly into the modem. From the modem, there will be an Ethernet cable (CAT5 twisted pair) connecting it to the router. The same type of cable should be used to connect your router to the computer.

Simple sometimes works!
Having done this - it magically worked. Many thanks - however - I then tried to connect wirelessly my laptop. It connects to the new wireless network, but I can't get the internet on there. Any ideas what's up. I dare say I need to configure it somehow?

In your routers settings, there will be some wireless settings. Configure the wireless settings, and in the main settings of the router, set the addressing system to DHCP (Dynamic).

Having had a go with th elaptop I went back to the main computer and the internet connection would not work when connected through the dlink router. Arghh. I have had to disconnect and "wire" straight into the cable modem to get internet access and yet it worked once!?

Re: Dlink 635 & Virgin cable

have you tried a wired setup from the router, some routers need to be set up this way before setting up wireless.
you need to follow the below instuctions first this should give you a basic setup:
turn off everything i.e modem router and computer
then connect the computer to the router (via a wired connection)
turn on the modem and wait for the steady light to stop flashing
then turn on the router when thats ready turn on the computer.
that should give you a basic setup via the router, then you need to go into the router settings and set up dynamic ip and the security settings.
you should then be able to connect via wireless on your laptop with your username and password you set in the security settings on the router

Re: Dlink 635 & Virgin cable

Just want to thank everyone for their help. I have connected and also got the laptop working remotely! Not bad for a rookie!
The answer for some reason was to resort to using the reset button on the back of the router. Having done everything everyone had suggested I was tearing my hair out and out of desperation pushed the reset button and hey presto it all worked.....
Thanks again - I'm sure I'll have more questions like where do I find the settings page to synchronise my e-mail account on the desktop and laptop, I connected the laptop to Pop3 and the it only went to the laptop and not my desktop - but thats not as life threatening as it was to get the laptop hooked up to the internet which it now is!
Thanks!!
