Will be router do?

I currently have a belkin G router and have done for around 3 years now. so far not had any problems and at the moment it is powering 3 pc's via ethernet and 1 laptop by wireless.

The signal is 100% with the wireless as the router/modem are upstairs and laptop is downstairs along with another pc and 25feet of ethernet cable for the pc.

When Virgin want to play ball both the laptop and pc downstairs can usually get the 2mb download (i'm on 20mb connection)

I've been looking at other routers G+, N and N1 and was wondering if an upgrade would be worth the money or with the current modem working ok it would be a waste??

I can't say I have noticed any slowdown when 3 pc's are running but would an upgrade be worth it. (i dont have any intentions of going to 50mb for a while) so been told that N routers are only really good for 50mb.

Well Virgin supply a Netgear wireless N router with all their 50Mb packages so if buying a new router take a leaf out of their book and futureproof yourself.

Dont really want to go 50mb at the moment, to be honest I dont think it would benefit me the extra cost to go 50mb as 20mb covers what I need it for at the moment.

There isn't actually a package set for the 50mb yet and as it stands they are offering triple XL for £45 a month

Don't you get a Netgear wireless N Router and adapter included in the install price of £ 80 with 50Meg?

On another note, shouldn't you get full speed through your wired connection on the PC downstairs and not 2Mb, or is that the laptop speed.

hi gavin78,if your happy that your connection is ok i would not bother upgrading yet ,however unless i misunderstand your post you are only getting 2mb from a 20mb connection through your router that suggests that something is wrong
if you do want to upgrade your router then by all means invest in a 'n' router BUT you will not notice any change in transfer speed between router and pc's untill you upgrade your pc/laptop wireless adapter to 'n'
i have just upgraded my router to a netgear 'n' router i am on 20mb i have 2 laptops 'g' and one pc with a 'n' adapter so as you can see 'n' routers are backwards compatible to 'g' so if you are going to upgrade get a 'n' then you will be ready when you upgrade any pc/laptops because most new models will have 'n' adapters in them
hope this helps

Hi sorry I am on 20mb connection, I was referring to the fact I can download at 2mb a second.

I hope to eventually go all wireless in the house. but I dont think a G router would cut online gaming?

you are on a 20 mbit/s (megabit), so you can download at 2MB (megabyte), don't get the two mixed up! ;) (8 bits in a byte)

I did not mean for you to upgrade all I meant was if buying a router go with wireless N to futureproof yourself.
