Network Security - IP address problems

Hi,

Wondered if you guys have any ideas on my problem:

I have a wireless network running a WRT54G with a laptop running on xp.

The security is set to WEP, I have read that this is now old hat and I should change to WPA.

On the admin website ( http://192.168.1.1 ) I changed the Wireless security settings to WPA Personal / TKIP. and the code.
On the laptop under the tab Wireless network connections / propeties changed to WPA Personal / TKIP. and the code.

The problem I have is after changing the settings on re boot of the laptop it says I'm connected to the network and generating a IP address is being generated, 20 mins later I'm still waiting for a IP address and no internet connection.:td:

Change everything back to the original settings ie: WEP and everything is ok

Is there anything I'm missing out and should be doing

Any ideas please ?

Thanks in anticipation

Re: Network Security - IP address problems

Do you have the router set to give out IP addresses via DHCP? There should be an option in the WRT54G's settings that allows you to enable a 'DHCP Server'. Check that this is enabled, and that your wireless client (laptop) is set to 'Obtain IP Address Automatically' (or similar).

Failing that try a reboot of the router.

If that doesn't work delete all wireless settings from your laptop and then configure that connection again from scratch.

If that doesn't work you may need to completely reset the router back to factory settings, delete the wireless settings from your laptop, and re-configure everything from scratch.

Thanks for the reply - now works on WPA :tu:

In the end I deleted all settings from the laptop and carried out a fresh install

NB: Did notice my laptop did not save the settings whilst saving it to WPA - PERSONAL but ok on just WPA

Cheers
Tim

I also have the WRT45G on DD-WRT firmware and I'm using WPA2 Personal Mixed TKIP+AES. My laptop saves it fine.
