Netgear FS605 Platinum Series 5 Port 10/100
 

Hi all.

I currently connect my laptop to my PS3 via a wireless router as the modem is in another room. I like to stream HD content to the PS3 via TVirsity however this lags when trying to play 1080p content. I would connect this all with wires but my wife would kill me leaving cat 5's all over the house.

Works a treat too with a wired connection.

Anyway I brought this netgear switch to solve the issue:

I feel silly as I don't know what a switch is but my questions is can I wire in my laptop and ps3 together on this device to send data to each other like on my wireless network?

Just done hours of research to no avil. Been told I need to buy a cross over cat 5 cable to connect the laptop to the PS3... so why then bother having to pay for a switch if one cable will do the trick.

Any advance would be amazing!

you should be able to, i have the FS608

Id plug port 1 into my router and plug the ps3 and PCs and other stuff into the other ports. These switches have the auto uplink thing so that you can plug your router into any port and it will work out which one it is :p:

when you say lags, you mean the movie stutters?
if so it might be the PS3 firmware 2.5x, look here:

Cool thanks, however I will not be connecting this device to my routers as that is downstairs. I will just use it to connect the laptop to the PS3, will this still work and do I need a cross over cable?

thanks for taking the tine to research the issue for me, when I am on a wired connection I can stream HD 1080p fine, however when going to my wireless connection I can not and the movie stutters because the network can not transfur enough data in the time needed. This is completely resolved when I go to a wired connection to my router.

However the router is downstairs and the ps3 and laptop are up stairs so I was looking for a way to connect the two of them without buying another router,

I hope this switch will do the tricks.

If you only need 2 devices connected together you do not need the switch at all, just a crossover cable, if you want to connect more than 2 devices than you need straight-through cables and a switch

Thanks, so can I use a switch and normal cables to connect 2 devices?

Sorry I am not usually this lame with tech but wired networking is alien to me...

Correct :) Although most modern switches are auto-sensing and can normally use either type

Just being looking to how to set this up before I can home with my switch, will I need to 'Bridge' the connection on my laptop to get the switch and ps3 talking to each other?

In hindsight I should have brought a router :p
