broadband splitter
 

my cable modem and wireless router are next to my desktop pc, my broadband goes into my modem, then to my router, then to my desktop to give it a wired connection. i am getting only 2mg download speeds on my wired desktop, and the same wirelessly on my laptop. so my question is could i use a rj45 splitter between the modem and the router and take one lead to the desktop and the other lead to the wireless router. does anyone think that would speed up my desktop?

Have you done a regular series of speed tests to establish what speeds you're actually getting at various times of the day?

If you're suffering network congestion, then there ought still to be times of the day when you can get something like what you're paying for. Admittedly that will not be at great times of day, probably very late evening and early morning. However if for some reason they have you on the 2 meg service when you're paying for something else, and you're not suffering congestion, then 2 meg is what you'll get most of the time.

Whatever is causing this, trying to split your modem output is not the solution. I suspect you're going to end up arguing with VM over whether you're getting the speed you're paying for (and there are other reasons why your speed might drop, such as a local fault).

Have you tried connecting the PC to the modem without the router at all? What speed do you get then?

What about removing the router and retesting with pc direct to cable modem.

Plus goto you're modem config pages and look at your Cable modem info. You should have 10240000 set as downstream bit rate

Just a thought, I believe you have to "re boot" the modem after upgrading to 10 meg, so if you were on a 2 meg, & they upgraded you, did you unplug the modem for a minute?

My connections are,,,Modem>SPA3103 VOIP ATA>Router>3 PC`s.

I was on 2 meg till the upgrade, then stayed on 2 meg till I phoned VM, re booting the modem gave me 10 meg. My speeds do vary, but never down to 2 meg.

i did,nt know that. but the modem has been rebooted since then for other reasons. thanx anyway...
