Need Help With NETGEAR Wireless Router
Hi, I was hoping someone on here could help me with a problem I've had with my Netgear 54mbps wireless router, WGR614-6VGUKS is the number on the bottom of it. When I recieved it originally it worked fine.
The problem I had was with my old Laptop, which went wrong (something to do with the hard drive I think.) So I ended up getting a new lap top (actually reconditioned, but works very well.) When the man in the shop showed it to me, he showed it working off the wireless connection in his shop, and it was fine. When I got it home and played the Virgin Media installation disc, it got to the final stage where it tries to find the wireless network, which it did. Only it did not complete the set up and a message read "couldn't connect, there may be a problem." I also clicked the little pc symbol in the bottom right of the screen, and from here the window listed avalible signals, Virgin being the only one. I clicked it, entered the security code on the modem, and again it couldn't connect despite the signal being "very strong" the router was literally next to the laptop. A couple of final points, I attempted to "Fix connection", which was one of the options, this got to the point of "Resetting I.P address" but got no further, I gave it an hour, but this mesage remained so I gave up. How long does this process normally take? Also, I attempted to connect my laptop to the router via an ethernet cable, but it didn't work. Therefore I think there is a problem with the router. Does anyone think it can be fixed or should I try and get a new one from Virgin? I currently run my modem directly into the laptop, which works, but is annoying as I have wires all over the place. It is strange as the router was fine untill my old laptop went wrong. I would very much appreciate any help. Thanks. |

I'd be inclinded to suspect the installation CD that you used, didn't complete fully or in fact corrupted something. Modern windows (XP, Vista) includes all the networking stuff you need for the connection, once you have run all the manufacturer's driver install routines for any inbuilt wireless and network cards for your computer.
If your computer is connecting wired to your modem, then it should also be able to connect wired to your router. Get a wired conection sorted first and worry about wireless later. You can't set the wireless connection options on the router untill wired is running and then you can log into the router via your internet explorer to check the SSID (network name) WAP (security settings) and the like. Check your network connection (TCP/IP) properties are all set to auto on the computer. Equally your internet explorer should be set to auto detect, with dial a connection unchecked. Power off all the modem, router, computer. Make your new wired connections between all three, power modem and let settle, then router and let settle then computer. |

Hi Rob, thanks for your help. I attempted what you recommended.
I wasn't sucsessful however. When I had turned all on, the little pc symbol in the bottom right had that little yellow ball going back and fourth, and never connected. About setting everything to auto, although I have came across these options in the past, I couldn't find them when I looked. Could I trouble you for a step by step guide? |

If you've reset and gone through the setup again, I highly suggest logging into the router and changing the channel, the default is 6 and seems to cause problems.

Try a pinhole reset and the set up instructions below.
Ensure the router is on and take a pen or a paperclip and look on the back of the router and you will see a small round hole big enough for the pen to go into press the reset button in this hole for approx 10 seconds then switch off the router and modem and switch modem on first let the lights settle then the router and wait till all lights are green now run the set up again Quick router set up for the V9 connect your laptop direct to the router in port 1to 4>open internet explorer>in the address bar put http://192.168.1.1/ when the login screen appears put in the username : virgin and the passphrase : password> the Netgear router page will now appear, down the left side click on Wireless settings>now name your network, something you remember and replace the passphrase with a new one at least 8 characters long and click apply, wait for it to finish updating and close the page. disconnect cable from laptop and router, ensure inbuilt wireless switched on, go to system tray and look for connect to a network icon ( not the virgin icon ) click it and find your network name, click connect put in your passphrase and when it says connected open a browser page and you should be connected. |

Thanks to moaningmags and moldova, ok I did what was suggested, logged onto the router (btw It's now running through the router, via ethernet cable.) A couple of problems, in the bottom right corner the little pc icon just has that yellow ball flying past it, and it says "aquiring network address" also when I view my wireless networks it reads "cannot configure this network, if using additional software use that"
I really do appreciate all the advice. |

Windows is telling you it can't configure it because you're using the wireless manager.
Find the wireless manager in the bottom right hand corner beside the time, right click on it and select shutdown, confirm that you're sure. Then go to add/remove programs and uninstall the wireless manager, windows will then try to connect you to your router. Did you change it from channel 6? |

OK, I made the call to VM, and went through all the uninstalling vm manager etc, and the conclusion was that my adaptors were indeed corrupted, as, despite wireless now connecting, I was unable to access internet.
The CS person told me I would need to take it to a repair shop. Can anyone confirn if this is correct, or can the adapters be uncorrupted at home. TBH I don't really know alot about adapters, but is it something which is downloaded? Or will I have to pay out money? Thanks everyone for your help. |

Joy Be Had!!! I'm on the Internet on this laptop without being plugged into the modem/router for the first time!!!
Took it down to Reboot, in Bath, and they fixed it in a matter of minutes. Didn't even have to pay them (but I gave them a few quid out of etiquette.) Turns out it wasn't corrupted, just two different adapters trying to deal with wireless (or something like that.) So thanks to all who gave advice, much appreciated. I can now watch Youtube whilst sat on the toilet (if I should wish.) Or read Cable Forum whilst cleaning my teeth in the bathroom. Cool. |

Just thought I'd update anyone who cares...
After finaly sorting out my router, two days later I smell a kind of burning, which coincides with my wireless stopping. What had happened? The wires at the bottem of the routers adaptor have frayed, and busted. Talk about sods law. Oh well, brought a new ac power adaptor on ebay for £7.50. |
